This looks like the ones I see here every day. But I wouldn't have the courage to ask if I could take pictures.

Hey, Willie. I've often wondered how certain signs become popular and widespread. For example, about a year and a half ago I saw a homeless man holding a sign that read, "Ninjas killed my family, need $ for kung-fu lessons." (I gave him a couple bucks to take his picture). Within a few months of seeing this guy, I saw "ninjas killed my family" signs all over the web.

Word of mouth? Panhandling success stories? How can it be a meme when it's Sharpies and cardboard? Do these homeless people go to the library and log on to some eHomeless or iHobo?

In your dealing with these signs, have you recognized the phenomena I'm describing? Any insights?

i'm surprised that homeless in US don't mention that they are ill [cancer, aids, paralysis, etc.] - they do that in poland.

but here the top 1 sign is "my child needs an operation. it costs 40000$. please help. GOD BLESS" - but i guess they're not homeless, it's just a kind of 9-5 work ;)

Wonderful idea for a blog!
I've been to several Rainbow Gatherings and have met many wanderers / homeless folks through that experience. I guess technically, I was one, but only for a short period of time when I was young.
I think my favorite was the alien spacecraft one- you get points for humor (at least from me) with that one!!

What an interesting thing to collect. The first question would be: How in the world would you obtain the signs?

it seems like you found a good solution to the question of "how" to engage. i also take photos of signs, but usually with the person's hands holding them (but not of the person themselves, unless the person has come out holding with me and then i ask for permission...)i was struck, however, by the quality of writing, and how similar it is to my own when i write and leave dream signs around.

Everytime I see a homeless sign, I think of you. And sometimes I even give money too.

Poet, not knowing it etc.

For whatever it is worth, for each of these signs, I will say a prayer that the person(s) behind them, next to them or near them will find help from caring humans, and will help those in need here on my side of the screen.

These are so touching. I am sure you are touched as well as you take the photos. They should be published...maybe with the stories that go with them.

Do you pay for taking photos of these signs? Well, that's one way to help.
